Dozens of U.S. lawmakers are calling on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to enforce federal laws against illegal pornography. State and national pro-family groups - including CitizenLink - are standing behind them and have scheduled a National Call Day on Thursday for concerned citizens to encourage the rest of Congress to get on board.
Federal laws prohibit distribution of obscene pornography on the Internet, on cable and satellite TV, through the mail and in retail outlets. Yet, there has not been a single new federal obscenity indictment since President Obama took office.
"Now is the time to make our voices heard," said Patrick Trueman, former Justice Department prosecutor and current CEO of Morality in Media. "We've all experienced and observed how pornography harms. We've still got the law on our side, so let's speak up!"
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Reps. Mike McIntyre, D-N.C., and Randy Forbes, R-Va., are circulating letters to their colleagues that call on Holder to take action; they have set March 18 as the deadline for signatures.
The letters read, in part: "We believe it is imperative that the Department, with cooperation by the FBI, investigate and prosecute all major producers and distributors of adult obscenity. We need your leadership."
