Tsunami Anniversary (BANDA ACEH)
People across Asia will pause today to remember the day five years ago when an undersea
earthquake unleashed a devastating wave that killed more than 220 thousand people.
A solemn day of prayers and remembrance to mark one of the world's worst natural disasters
is to be held in Indonesia's Aceh province .. which lost almost 170 thousand people in
the Asian Tsunami of December 26 2004.
Similar scenes will play out in countries such as India .. Sri Lanka and Thailand ..
where more than 50 thousand people were killed as the wall of water smashed into coastal
communities from KALUTARA to PHUKET.
But as the survivors remember the dead .. experts warn that many countries in the region
remain ill-prepared to face another killer wave.
US Plane (WASHINGTON)
A man who tried to light an explosive aboard a passenger plane as it landed in Detroit
on a flight from Amsterdam .. has told investigators he's affiliated with al-Qaeda.
CNN says the man told investigators he acquired the explosive in Yemen .. along with
instructions on its use.
President BARACK OBAMA has immediately ordered increased security for air travel.

remain on standby.
Official figures are yet to be updated .. but there are initial reports that some areas
in central areas may already have received up to 200 millimetres of rain in the past
24 to 36 hours.
The rain's a result of Tropical Cyclone Laurence .. which affected northern West Australia
in recent weeks .. and the system's moving across inland Queensland and central New South
Wales over the next few days.
US Storms (CHICAGO)
At least 24 deaths have been blamed on a massive storm system blanketing the central
United States .. stranding thousands of motorists in whiteout conditions .. and coating
roads with ice during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled over Christmas at airports from Minneapolis to Dallas.
It's the second major storm system to sweep the country this week .. after a record-breaking
snowstorm slammed the eastern seaboard on the final busy shopping weekend before Christmas.
Sales (MELBOURNE)
The kids might get excited waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve .. but it's the
parents' turn today with the post-Christmas sales.
Eager shoppers waited outside major retailers from as early as midnight .. before the
doors started opening at dawn on Boxing Day.
Cricketing WAGs LARA BINGLE and RIANNA PONTING rang the bell to mark the opening of
the David Jones Melbourne store at 6am.
And former and current swimming stars IAN THORPE and STEPHANIE RICE did the honours in Sydney.
Access Economics predicts Australians will part with 14.7 billion dollars during the
post Christmas sales.
Rookie (MELBOURNE)
Rookie Carlton footballer LEVI CASBOULT has been involved in a fatal car crash .. just
days after the club's boozy boat cruise sparked fines and an arrest.
19-year-old CASBOULT wasn't hurt .. but a 21-year-old man died in the head-on collision
at Dandenong .. in Melbourne's southeast on Christmas Eve.
The crash occurred on the same day as a report appeared that CASBOULT was bound to
a team-mate as part of a drinking game during last Saturday's notorious river cruise.
The death took Victoria's holiday road toll to 10 .. and the annual toll to 288 ..
10 fewer than at the same time last year.

DONNY SCHATZ and All Stars Champion TIM SHAFFER, has now been scheduled for tomorrow night.
Boxing Pacquiao (LAS VEGAS)

NSW: Coonamble to withstand rising flood waters
AAP General News (Australia)
12-24-2007
NSW: Coonamble to withstand rising flood waters
SYDNEY, Dec 24 AAP - Rising floodwaters are expected to pass the central NSW town of
Coonamble without incident, the State Emergency Service (SES) says.
A levee on one side of Coonamble is effectively protecting the town from rising waters
in the Castlereagh River, swollen by heavy rainfall on Friday night.
Some 171mm of rain fell at Coonamble during the 24 hours up to 9am (AEDT) Saturday,
which the Bureau of Meteorology said was more than the town's three-month average.
"The river is getting reasonably close to its peak at the moment at about 4.5m, but
is still rising very slowly," SES spokesman Phil Campbell told AAP a short time ago.
"The river was still rising well past the predicted peak time of 9pm or 9.30pm (AEDT)
and the peak has now been pushed back by the bureau (of Meteorology) a couple of times."
Initial predictions were that the river would peak at 5.2m, but that has been revised
downward, Mr Campbell said.
"This morning (the bureau) said slightly below 5m, and at this stage it's reasonably
close to that," he said.
Fears that some 25 homes in low-lying parts of Coonamble would suffer over-floor flooding
have been dismissed, although waters have isolated several properties and the township
itself.
The NSW government today declared the town and a number of other areas, including Lachlan,
Bland, Parkes, Warren and Broken Hill natural disaster zones, opening the way for residents
to make assistance claims.
A number of these towns were lashed by wild weather last weekend, leading local people
to place nearly 600 calls for help to the State Emergency Service (SES).
Farmers who lost livestock and suffered flood damage will now be able to apply for
natural disaster relief.
NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said farmers would have access to loans
of up to $132,000 with interest-free periods, low interest rates and 10-year repayment
periods.
"It is regrettable that a number of farmers have lost fencing and livestock," Mr Macdonald
told reporters in Sydney.
"We will attend to that with natural disaster-relief arrangements."
But Mr Macdonald said it wasn't all doom and gloom for the state's north-west.
"Overall, to be getting such significant rainfall at this time of year is very good
news for the farming sector," he said.
"It will have a very positive benefit in terms of pasture growth and cropping down
the track because of the high level of moisture in those areas."
The most pressing issue facing the SES is the deliver of supplies to isolated properties,
the SES said.
"There are a few isolated properties at the moment some of which are quite large cattle
stations with up to about a dozen people and we have already done a couple of resupplies
today," Mr Campbell said.
"There are also animals requiring fodder drops and there will be more of these drops
as people begin to run out os essentials."
The SES is using two helicopters and high-clearance vehicles to reach the properties.
From tomorrow residents in the region should start to see flood waters subside, Mr Campbell said.

NSW: Debnam pulls out of NSW leadership contest
By Simon Kirby and Peter Jean
SYDNEY, April 2 AAP - Peter Debnam has withdrawn from the contest for the NSW Liberal
Party leadership, clearing the way for Barry O'Farrell to step into the role unopposed.
Mr Debnam, whose opposition achieved only a small swing against the unpopular Labor
government at the March 24 state election, made the announcement at a brief press conference
at state parliament today.
"At this time it is important for the party to avoid what could be a divisive leadership
contest," he told reporters.
"We have worked too hard since 2005 to ensure unity and build political momentum.
"As a result I will not force a vote for the leadership."
The move means Mr O'Farrell is the sole candidate for the leadership, which will officially
be determined in a party room vote on Wednesday.
Mr Debnam said his replacement would have his full support.
"With the election of another leader on Wednesday, the Liberal Party must commit to
support and encouraging the new leader through the full term of this Parliament," Mr Debnam
said.
"I look forward to working with the new leader to ensure success at the 2011 state election."
After reading a prepared statement, Mr Debnam refused to answer questions.
Mr O'Farrell declined to comment on Mr Debnam's decision to pull out of the ballot.
He was likely to win 18 votes in the party room on Wednesday whereas Mr Debnam had
only 12, NSW coalition powerbrokers told Fairfax.
The leadership change follows a weak showing in the state election, in which the opposition
parties secured less than a four per cent swing against the incumbent Labor government,
which has been in power for 12 years.
Mr O'Farrell and Mr Debnam both nominated for the Liberal leadership in August 2005
after former leader John Brogden resigned.
After Mr Brogden made an apparent suicide bid, Mr O'Farrell pulled out of the leadership
race, allowing Mr Debnam to be elected unopposed.
A spokesman for Mr O'Farrell said he had no comment on Mr Debnam's decision and would
respect the right of Liberal MPs to decide on the leadership when they meet on Wednesday.
"He's not going to pre-empt what the party room might decide," the spokesman said.
"But he's very much going to respect the wishes and the rights of the party room to
vote on Wednesday morning."

NSW: Rescue team sent to save koalas from bushfires
SYDNEY, Dec 1 AAP - The NSW government has rushed a rescue team to the state's north
to save injured koalas threatened by massive bushfires.
NSW's largest koala population is in the Pilliga region, near Coonabarabran, where
an enormous fire has devoured more than 100,000ha of bushland in the Pilliga Nature Reserve.
Wildlife authorities say the area holds the most genetically diverse population of
koalas in Australia because of the size and and quality of its bush.
NSW Environment Minister Bob Debus last night ordered Sydney's Taronga Zoo and National
Parks and Wildlife Rescue Service to urgently head to the Pilliga and get koalas to safety.
A Wildlife Rescue Service Van was to pick up a veterinary team from Dubbo's Western
Plains Zoo en route.
Injured koalas were to be assessed at the scene and taken to Western Plains Zoo.
Taronga Zoo will also be on standby if koala casualties are high.
"One of the great challenges for wildlife in bushfires is the staggering speed with
which the fires move and the searing heat they generate," Mr Debus said.
"Koalas are particularly vulnerable as they are tree dwellers and cannot move fast
enough on the ground to escape the flames."
It was worthwhile rescuing the marsupials as research showed they were quite capable
of surviving once reintroduced to the bush, he said.

NSW: Boy, aged 11, among three charged over rape of teenage girl
By David Dixon
ORANGE, NSW, Aug 23 AAP - Three young boys, including an 11-year-old, charged with
raping a 13-year-old girl laughed at the allegations during police interviews, a court
has been told.
A 15-year-old boy and his 11-year-old brother faced Orange Children's Court in central
western NSW today charged with aggravated sexual assault.
A third boy, aged 14, faces the same charge but did not appear in court today.
The 11-year-old is believed to be the youngest person ever charged with such a crime in NSW.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail.
The trio allegedly raped the girl on July 20 after chasing her into the grounds of
an historic Orange home after meeting her at a skate park.
Police documents tendered to the court allege the boys pushed her to the ground before
two of them made her perform oral sex on them while the third indecently assaulted her.
The girl also received cuts and bruises from being pushed to the ground, the documents said.
The documents said the three were arrested after being spotted at a supermarket by
a witness to the alleged attack.
When interviewed by police on July 27, they allegedly refused to answer questions and
laughed at the officers present, the documents said.
Defence counsel Andrew Rolfe, for the 15-year-old, told the court there were issues
with the identity of the girl's alleged attackers.
"There are issues about (which) young children were actually involved in the offence," he said.
Magistrate Jan Stevenson remanded the 15-year-old in custody and continued strict bail
conditions for his brother.
She also extended a police apprehended violence order (AVO) against the third boy,
which was initially granted on July 27.
The two brothers waved and laughed at each other during today's court proceedings.
Magistrate Stevenson ordered the three return to Orange Children's Court on September 6.

WWII's aviation past takes flight at Porter County airport show

You wouldn't think an empty shell casing could upstage the only still-flying B-25D in the world, the same type of plane used to bomb Tokyo. But everybody who came to the Indiana Aviation Museum's Vintage Warbird Fly-in at the Porter County Municipal Airport Saturday wanted to get a look at the former 500-pound bomb similar to the one they'd read about in the news from Iraq this week.
"Don't drop it," joked a member of the Yankee Warrior crew as the hollowed-out piece of ordnance was set upright on its tailfins, ready to collect donations for a new hangar at the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Mich.
As for the plane, it's "the most pristine B-25 you will ever see. It flies like a Maserati," according to Doug Duff of Windsor, Ontario, one of the volunteers who flew the former Royal Canadian Air Force bomber in for the exhibition. He said other B-25s still in the air are all later "J" models.
"The museum got this from a collector and restored it. With all the parts and work put in by volunteers, I don't know what it would cost," said Bill Clark of Ann Arbor, Mich., chief pilot for the Yankee Air Force and a 747 pilot for Northwest Airlines.
Duff pointed to eight black silhouettes painted on the nose tallying its bombing missions over the Mediterranean and two building-like outlines below them.
"Those are the outhouses they knocked over. Seriously," Duff said
"This is the first time I've seen a B-25. It looked bigger on TV," said Dale Katz, a Navy Vietnam veteran from Lansing, Ill. Duff said the plane has a wingspan of 66 feet, 7 inches.
Alex Kukurugay, 9, of Valparaiso was silent as he took a closer look at the 50-caliber machine guns in the nose with his grandfather, Steve Sopko, an ex-Air Force intelligence officer.
Other men from the Michigan museum helped children and parents up stepladders for a look inside the aircraft and took sign-ups for 45-minute flights at $400 a seat. Both the Michigan and Indiana museums maintain several vintage airplanes that they use as fundraisers by offering flights to the public.
Boswell said the museum will be offering special Father's Day flights next weekend at 10 percent off the usual sponsorship rates in the F-4U Corsair, P-51 Mustang, and A-37 Dragonfly that are part of the collection of 12 airplanes.
If you go
The Indiana Aviation Museum Vintage Warbird Fly-in continues from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Porter County Municipal Airport, one mile east of Indiana 49. Admission is free, and there is a parking fee of $5.

Climate spend is big business.
Seventy per cent of firms with revenue of $1 billion or more say they plan to increase spending on climate change initiatives in the next two years, a global survey said.
Nearly half of the 300 corporate executives who responded to a survey conducted for the accounting and consulting giant Ernst and Young said their climate change investments will range from 0.5 per cent to more than five per cent of revenues by 2012.
More than four out of five respondents, or 82 per cent, said they plan to invest in energy efficiency in the next 12 months, with 92 per cent saying energy costs will be an important driver over that period.
Corporate executives were committed to taking action even though they said complying with regulations that vary from state to state or country to country would make that a challenge.
The fact that 70 per cent of executives said they planned to spend more on climate change programmes was "one of the more stunning findings" of the survey, according to Melanie Steiner of Ernst and Young.
Despite regulatory uncertainty on climate change, "companies are really taking action anyway, because they're seeing that this is a business issue and an opportunity to generate new revenue", Steiner said.
While action to deal with the effects of climate change used to be a matter of public relations, it has now become an opportunity to make money through new services and products, save money through enhanced efficiency and limit risk, Steiner added.
One sign of this change is that more than 90 per cent of those surveyed said climate change governance rests with top executives or board members, with 36 per cent saying that the CEO is the most senior person responsible on this issue.
High-level responsibility does not guarantee corporate-wide comprehension of the importance of climate change policies, one survey respondent said.
"I believe the main problem is that organisations do not necessarily recognise or understand the link between climate change-related issues and the future fitness of the organisation," the anonymous respondent said.
"At a very senior level it is given importance.
However, at lower levels there is [a lack of knowledge] of the issue."
The survey, conducted by the independent analyst research firm Verdantix, drew respondents from Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US.

New Ecology Research Research from S.L. Vanwilgenburg and Colleagues Discussed.
"The recent application of stable-isotope analyses, particularly the use of stable-hydrogen-isotope (delta D) measurements of animal tissues, has greatly improved our ability to infer geographic origins of migratory animals. However, many individual sources of error contribute to the overall error in assignment; thus likelihood-based assignments incorporating estimates of error are now favored," scientists in Saskatoon, Canada report.
"In addition, globally, the nature of the underlying precipitation-based delta D isoscapes is such that longitudinal resolution is often compromised. For example, in North America, amount-weighted expected mean growing-season precipitation delta D is similar between the boreal forest of southwestern Canada and areas of northern Quebec/Labrador and Alaska. Thus, it can often be difficult to distinguish objectively between these areas as potential origins for broadly distributed migrants using a single isotopic measurement. We developed a Bayesian framework for assigning geographic origins to migrant birds based on combined stable-isotope analysis of feathers and models of migratory directions estimated from band recovery data. We outline our method and show an example of its application for assigning origins to a population of migrant White-throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) sampled at a Canadian Migration Monitoring Network station at Delta Marsh, Manitoba, Canada," wrote S.L. Vanwilgenburg and colleagues.
The researchers concluded: "We show that likelihood-based assignments of geographic origins can provide improved spatial resolution when models of migration direction are combined with assignments based on delta D analysis of feathers."
Vanwilgenburg and colleagues published their study in Ecological Applications (Combining stable-isotope (Delta D) and band recovery data to improve probabilistic assignment of migratory birds to origin. Ecological Applications, 2011;21(4):1340-1351).

Gartner Identifies Five Collaboration Myths.
Analysts Explore How to Build High Performance Teams at Gartner PPM & IT Governance Summit 2011, June 14-15, London
Egham, UK - Collaboration initiatives fail because IT leaders hold mistaken assumptions about basic issues, according to Gartner, Inc. IT leaders should determine which of five factors - technology, roles, process, metrics and workplace climate - to change to achieve successful collaboration projects.
"There are five myths that derail collaboration initiatives," said Carol Rozwell, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. "Rather than making technology the starting point, IT leaders should first identify real business problems and key performance indicators (KPIs) that link to business goals."
The five collaboration myths Gartner has identified are:
1. The right tools will make us collaborative
Technology can make it easier to collaborate when applications mirror a more intuitive, fluid work style, but selecting a tool without addressing roles, processes, metrics and the organization's workplace climate is putting the cart before the horse.
2. Collaboration is inherently a good thing
Many organizations can't articulate what benefit they hope to achieve by employing social media to become more collaborative. This decreases the likelihood of achieving a successful implementation. The most successful social media initiatives solve real business problems. The KPI impacted must be real and relevant to the business.
3. Collaborating takes extra time
When IT leaders perform a thorough analysis of the target audience's workflow to make sure key integration points among applications are identified, they will avoid the common mistake of simply layering collaboration tools on top of existing applications that workers are expected to use. If collaboration and social software tools are not integrated with other critical applications, workers must shift context - which slows them down - or duplicate effort (e.g., cut/paste from one application to another).
4. People naturally will/will not collaborate
Depending on their level of cynicism, people believe that humans naturally collaborate, or naturally don't. While there are individuals at each end of the spectrum, most are somewhere in the middle and can be encouraged to collaborate under the right conditions. IT leaders should ignore the reluctant minority and work on motivating the majority of workers who can be persuaded to collaborate when expectations are clear and collaborative behaviors are rewarded.
5. People instinctively know how to collaborate
Without a set of expectations about what it means to work collaboratively with others, individuals will be forced into using their own interpretation of collaboration. Few organizations have a clear set of guidelines that describe how people should interact with each other to produce optimum results. A better approach is to clarify what attitude a collaborative individual needs to bring to their work, what abilities and skills they need to master and what personal style works well in a team setting. It is also critical that managers demonstrate the behaviors they want their employees to mirror.
"Not all processes make the same contribution to business performance. IT leaders need to look for situations to apply collaborative approaches that give the organization not just a competitive advantage but competitive differentiation," said Ms. Rozwell. "The most successful collaboration initiatives solve real business problems, aiming to affect a KPI that links to an organization's business goals."

Collaboration & Social Tools Drain Business Productivity, Costing Millions in Work Interruptions.
The proliferation of collaboration and social tools designed to increase productivity is actually costing businesses millions of dollars per year in lost productivity, according to a survey of more than 500 employees in U.S. businesses of all sizes conducted by online market research firm uSamp (United Sample) and commissioned by social email software provider harmon.ie.
Nearly 60% of work interruptions now involve either using tools like email, social networks, text messaging and IM, or switching windows among disparate standalone tools and applications. In fact, 45% of employees work only 15 minutes or less without getting interrupted, and 53% waste at least one hour a day due to all types of distractions.
That hour per day translates into $10,375 of wasted productivity per person annually, assuming an average salary of $30/hour. That is more than the average U.S. driver will spend this year to own and maintain a car. For businesses with 1,000 employees, the cost of employee interruptions exceeds $10 million per year.
"This survey paints a picture of a highly distracted workplace with a particular irony: information technology that was designed at least in part to save time is actually doing precisely the opposite. The very tools we rely on to do our jobs are also interfering with that mission. We're clearly seeing what psychologists call 'online compulsive disorder' spill over from our personal lives to the work environment ," said Yaacov Cohen, co-founder and CEO of harmon.ie. "For all of us, it's time to take back the Internet and find ways to control our digital addiction."
Among the survey findings: MOST WORK DISRUPTIONS ARE ELECTRONIC While traditional activities such as phone calls, talking with coworkers, and ad hoc meetings account for 43% of work interruptions today, the lion's share of distractions are now electronically based.
Users reported getting sidetracked in email processing (23%), switching windows to complete tasks (10%), personal online activities such as Facebook (9%), instant messaging (6%), text messaging (5%) and Web search (3%).

New Stanford Computing Lab Explores Technology, Ethics and More in the Mobile-Social Future.
At MobiSocial, a diverse engineering research team asks fundamental questions about the marriage of mobile communications and social networking, and begins to formulate what the future of open-source social networking will look like
STANFORD, Calif. -- The Stanford University School of Engineering today announced the launch of MobiSocial Computing Laboratory, a collaboration between the researchers in the Stanford Computer Science Department along with scientists from leading industry corporations such as Google, Nokia, AVG Technologies and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. MobiSocial will explore fundamental questions at the intersection of mobile communications and social networking.
At a recent kickoff event, MobiSocial's group of eminent computer scientists, graduate students, technology experts and industry representatives gathered to ask the most fundamental questions about social media and mobility: Can social be done better? Can it be even more social and more fun? Can it be more open? Can it be more secure? And, if so, how?
"Facebook, Flickr and Twitter are all fantastic ideas and transformative uses of technology," said Monica Lam, professor of computer science at Stanford's School of Engineering and faculty director of MobiSocial. "But people have rushed into proprietary playgrounds seemingly unconcerned about the consequences ranging from limited innovation to privacy."
Staggering figures
As of January 2011, the Facebook user base reached more than 600 million active users worldwide. One in ten people on the planet is registered and actively using the service. Like the Web before and, later, mobile phones, the shift to social media happened rapidly, before anyone could fully understand what such mass adoption might portend.
In fact, mobile social networking evolved at such a breakneck pace that critical questions surrounding the ethics of sharing information with a mobile/temporal component--location-informed, photos, status updates, and beyond--could only emerge retroactively. Technological advances and public adoption severely outstripped considerations of privacy and etiquette. MobiSocial aims to take an aggressive step ahead of the curve so that consumers are better protected as they venture onto the mobile social networking frontier.
Innovative new apps
Among other initiatives, MobiSocial is working to create a new class of mobile and social computing technology that works in consumers' interests while enabling all the positive aspects of social media - from ecommerce to more closely-knit social circles. In short, MobiSocial is about imagining and creating an open-source mobile-social media future.
That said, the team has already produced a suite of applications that define a new direction for anywhere-anytime communications while promoting innovation, fair competition, personal data security and, of course, privacy. They include:
* Mr. Privacy, an open-source rethinking of social networking that enables the intuitive sharing of links, photos, music, videos and comments via e-mail, rather than on social networks themselves, so that users can avoid unwanted ads and involuntary placement into pre-selected networks.
* SocialFlow, a Facebook app that helps users organize and manage their many social groups by looking at the images a person was tagged in recently and by analyzing their email traffic. The app then suggests sub-groups, which the user can further refine to better manage social interactions.
"MobiSocial is working to ensure that the exponential growth of mobile social networking plays out in an environment that is as intelligent and engaging as it is secure," said Karel Obluk, chief scientist at AVG Technologies. "AVG believes it has a responsibility to help promote the kind of technological leadership that keeps users and their information safe while allowing them a greater degree of joy and excitement over the sharing of information."
About MobiSocial
The work of MobiSocial Computing Laboratory is part of the National Science Foundation's Programmable Open Mobile Internet (POMI) 2020 Expedition, which works to remove barriers to innovation through creation of open standards and systems. The MobiSocial Computing Laboratory is a collaboration between the Stanford Computer Science Department along with scientists from leading industry corporations such as AVG Technologies, Google, Nokia and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. Connecticut Hip-Hop, Out of the Shadows.
DANBURY, Conn., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- Fairfield County might not be the fist place that comes to mind when thinking about rap music. The stigma of the Gold Coast - pink polos and trust fund babies - is ever-present. However, since hip-hop came to Connecticut in the late 1970's, the movement has slowly been gaining momentum in the Nutmeg state. Though it has long been dwarfed by its neighbor to the south, the state's underground scene is flourishing. Now more than ever, CT hip-hop appears ready to step out of the shadows.
Getting there hasn't been easy. "Back in the day you didn't hear anything coming out of CT, nobody took it seriously," says Mack1er of the Bethel based group The Path We Chose. "The serious stuff came out of NY, then the West Coast."
With no backing, no distribution, and no image... the prospects for CT rappers were bleak.
However insurmountable these challenges seemed, Connecticut hip-hop artists kept working, and that work has paid off. Through endurance and creativity, and with the power of the Internet, the hip-hop scene from Stamford and Norwalk, to Bethel and Danbury, is thriving.
"Its funny 'cause comin' up, no one was rappin', now there's a surplus of rappers," says Danbury based rapper Al Babblez.
Social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube allow artists to upload music, post videos, and keep fans informed of new releases and shows. Artists are also able to attract new fans via the web, which is key to growth. "We distribute our music solely in digital format online," states Mack1er. "It's not like it used to be. Now you put your music on iTunes and it's immediately available worldwide."
As for working on the image, "I'm definitely underground. I try to keep things 'ultra real' and won't hold my tongue for anyone. I let the obvious be known, point blank, no reserves," says Al Babblez.
Such is the attitude many Connecticut hip-hop artists have taken as they strive to distinguish themselves from the Big Apple and shed the image of elitist preppy suburbia. The effort seems to be working.
Connecticut hip-hop continues to expand as digital outlets allow artists' music to be heard by more people from CT and beyond.
Mack1er remains optimistic, "The road's been a long one, but the best is yet to come."

Tony Tsao maps out ambitious goals for D-Link.(D-Link Corp.)
Tony Tsao, CEO and president of the D-Link Corp., the world's No. 1 brand-name supplier of network connectivity solutions for the end market, promises to almost double the company's revenue to US$2 billion in 2013 (up from US$1.06 billion in 2010) and to make his brand as famous as Apple's.
To achieve those goals, Tsao hopes to harness the emerging trend of Internet, fixed-line network, telecasting network, and mobile network convergence to create applications including online music, game, and e-mail downloads on devices like smartphones and set-top boxes. This trend will make digitized multimedia available everywhere. "In the past," Tsao explains, "technological revolutions in the network-connectivity industry were usually driven each time by one single development, with wireless technology coming first and then broadband. In the coming 10 years there will be multiple driving forces at the same time. The new wave of technological revolution in the industry is just beginning."
HTC, Tsao notes, fueled the demand for mobile broadband last year, after Apple introduced its iPhone, by introducing more powerful smartphones. "This year," the CEO continues, "tablet PCs and other intelligent end products will join smartphones in facilitating the development of the mobile-broadband industry by fostering investments by service providers in broadband infrastructure such as optic-fiber networks."
Telecoms carriers around the world, including Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom, plan to boost capital spending this year. Tsao notes, "Chunghwa, for instance, will spend a quarter more capital this year than last on broadband infrastructure, presenting lucrative business opportunities for providers of network-connectivity solutions."
Tsao believes that Internet-based applications will trigger the explosive development of network convergence, with online gaming leading the way followed by online medicine and education. "To keep up with this transition," he comments, "D-Link is building application software into its equipment and diversifying retail channels. This change reminds me of the D-Link2.0 project of Ken Kao, D-Link's late founder, which aimed to combine our hardware with application software to connect with cloud computing and the Internet."
When bundled with multi-application software, Tsao estimates, devices can sell for US$1,000 to US$2,000 each--10 times the prices of pure devices alone. "The migration to application-enabled equipment," he says, "has made D-Link unmatched in the industry, and this inspires us to pursue the goal of making our brand name as well known as Apple within 25 years of operation."
A convenient means to this end is making D-Link products available in Apple's contracted stores. "We're convincing the contracted stores to sell our products along with iPads and iPhones," Tsao reports. Products carrying the D-Link brand can now be purchased in 80 countries.
Citing HTC's success in promoting its own-brand smartphones, Tsao emphasizes that brand names will be crucial to the development of Taiwan's high-tech industries as they build supply chains around brand-name operations. "Taiwan's government may work out a policy to promote this by borrowing from the successful experiences of other countries, and helping Taiwan's high-tech industries with brand-name development," Tsao suggests.
The company is adding optic-fiber infrastructure equipment, DOCSIS3.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications 3.0) end-user equipment for cable TV, IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) equipment, business switchers, and home hubs for mobile broadband to its traditional network-application and multimedia equipment this year. "With the business opportunities for these new products becoming mature," Tsao assets, "we're confident that our sales will double to US$2 billion in 2013."
Last year D-Link's after-tax earnings amounted to NT$1.22 billion (US$40.7 million), yielding NT$1.89 per shareiXa year-on-year increase of 138.7%. Revenues in 2010 were up 9.2%, to NT$33.8 billion (US$1.1 billion).
In 2010, 57% of the company's exports went to emerging and Asia-Pacific markets, North America took a quarter (up 7.1 percentage points), and Europe took 18% (down 7.4 points). Shipments of switches rose 22.6% last year, digital home equipment climbed 6.8%, and broadband equipment rose 5.1%.
Tsao thinks that the mainland's 12th Five-year Development Plan and the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) that Taiwan and China signed last year will help boost D-Link's growth in the years to come. "ECFA inspires mainland China's government and enterprises to purchase electronics products from Taiwan," he explains, "and the new Five-Year Plan will inspire more investment in broadband and mobile network infrastructure on the mainland. Both of these developments present huge business opportunities for D-Link."
KT's IPTV user base nearing the 1 million mark.(SERVICES)(Brief article)(Statistical data)
Korean telecom operator KT Corp.'s Internet Protocol television (IPTV) user base is nearing 1 million, according to reliable sources. Regulator Korea Communications Commission said that the country's IPTV user base is around 988,000. This consists of 703,000 real-time IPTV subscriptions and around 285,000 video-on-demand (VoD) users. But, although KT is witnessing a healthy growth rate in its IPTV subscriber numbers, the segment as a whole may not be able to reach the target of 2 million users by this year's end.

It's here and it looks goofy.
The following editorial appeared in the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday, 12-4:
This is what $100 million buys you these days: A goofy-looking thingamabob big enough for a solo standing rider. Think lawnmower without the blades or pogo stick with giant wheels.
This is "IT," codename "Ginger," whose rumored existence created a bonanza of buzz when it leaked out about a year ago.
Now it's official and its New Hampshire inventor insists "IT" will revolutionize short-distance travel by filling the vacuum between walking and driving. Who knew there was a vacuum?
Dean Kamen, Ginger's father as it were, is no mad scientist. He's a serious inventor. Among his 100 or so patents are the portable dialysis machine, the first insulin pump, the heart stent that Vice President Dick Cheney is currently using and a wheelchair that climbs stairs _ initially codenamed Fred. (Get it? Fred and Ginger?)
He has serious backers who helped finance the $100 million development costs of the Segway Human Transporter, the official name of this device.
The Segway has a top speed of about 17 mph. It gets its stability from a gyroscope, making it virtually impossible to knock over, and its power from a battery. Riders control speed and direction by shifting their weight.
The consumer model will sell for $3,000 and a heavy-duty industrial model for $8,000. The U.S. Postal Service and National Park Service are already ordering up some and companies are exploring its use for getting around warehouses, factories and sprawling corporate campuses.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ruled it isn't a vehicle. If that's the case, riders need no insurance and no license and "IT" can travel the sidewalks.
What happens if two Segways collide? Do they just bounce off each other and propel each other backward? What happens when it rains? Or snows? And are we really ready for the kind of revolution that adds more wheels to our sidewalks? Aren't scooters, skateboards and bicycle messengers (you know who you are) enough already? Maybe New Hampshire sidewalks have room for Gingers; Chicago's are already full.
But who knows? Kamen could be on to something. Maybe "IT" will indeed turn out to be as revolutionary "to the car (as) the car was to the horse and buggy," as he predicts in this week's Time.
After all, lots of people scoffed at Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers in their day. Now we couldn't live without their brainy ideas. So maybe "IT" will be like that. Or not.
Maybe "IT" will wheel itself into oblivion, over there with paper clothing, the electric hotdogger and all those other inventions that have one thing in common: It turned out we could, indeed, live without them.

eBay Files Tender Offer to Acquire Publicly-Held Shares of Internet Auction Co.
Business Editors
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 2003
eBay, The World's Online Marketplace (Nasdaq:EBAY; www.ebay.com) today announced that it has filed tender offer documentation in Korea to acquire, through a cash tender offer, the remaining publicly-held common shares of Internet Auction Co., Ltd. (IAC), the Korean online trading company (Kosdaq: 043790; www.auction.co.kr). The offer is only available in Korea.
The acquisition is expected to be completed by mid-December of 2003. eBay expects that the total price to be paid to acquire all of the IAC shares would be approximately $382 million, assuming all of the remaining 6,394,225 publicly-held shares of IAC are tendered, and based on the November 14, 2003 exchange rate of KRW1,171 to US$1.00. Since there is no minimum number of shares required to be tendered for eBay to complete the tender offer, eBay will purchase any shares tendered. eBay acquired majority ownership of IAC in February 2001, and currently owns slightly more than 50 percent of its outstanding shares.
eBay does not believe the acquisition will affect its financial guidance for the fourth quarter of 2003 and the full year 2004 as issued in connection with its third quarter earnings release on October 16, 2003.
More information about the acquisition and its effect on eBay can be found on eBay's investor relations website at http://investor.ebay.com/faq.cfm.

MADISON LOCKSMITH JOSHUA BURLIN CONVICTED OF IDENTITY THEFT AND FALSE SWEARING.
MADISON, WI -- The following information was released by the office of the Wisconsin Attorney General:
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced that on March 21, 2011, former Madison resident Joshua Burlin was found guilty of one count of identity theft and one count of false swearing, both felonies, following his entry of a guilty plea before Dane Circuit Judge Nicholas J. McNamara.
Attorneys for the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), acting as special prosecutors for Dane County, filed a criminal complaint in Dane County Circuit Court in July 2010 against Joshua Burlin, charging Burlin with five counts of false swearing and one count of identity theft. The crimes of false swearing and identity theft are both punishable by a fine not to exceed $10,000, imprisonment not to exceed 6years, or both.
The false swearing charges against Burlin are based upon allegedly false testimony Burlin gave in a deposition taken by the Department of Justice in December 2009. According to the complaint, Burlin falsely testified that he had never listed fictitious addresses on the Internet for his various locksmith business names and that he had never posted fictitious consumer reviews regarding his own business or competing businesses. However, according to the complaint, Burlin did in fact use false addresses and posted phony reviews on the Internet.
In addition, the complaint charges Burlin with one count of identity theft for posting a phony ad on Craigslist stating that a competing locksmith business was for sale, in March 2009. As part of the resolution of the case, the remaining four counts of false swearing were disposed of as read-in counts, which will be considered for purposes of sentencing.
Burlin is scheduled to be sentenced in Dane County Circuit Court on April 26, 2011, at 11:00 a.m.
This case was investigated by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Wisconsin Statute Chapter 950 Victim Services are being provided by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of Crime Victim Services. Assistant Attorneys General Eric D. Defort and John S. Greene represent the State of Wisconsin as special prosecutors.
