Vic: Union leaders and BHP to meet over Pilbara dispute
(EMBARGOED UNITIL 0600 on 10 Feb)
Union leaders will meet with BHP management in Melbourne today to resolve the on-going
industrial dispute in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
The dispute which turned nasty earlier this month when violence broke out between picketing
union members and some BHP management, recently took a new turn - the unions won an injunction
stopping BHP from offering further individual contracts.
DOUG CAMERON of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, who will fly from Sydney
for the talks today, says the dispute is about the rights of workers to negotiate a collective
agreement.
The ACTU's secretary-elect GREG COMBET will also attend the meeting.
